Nikon SB-28DX Electronic Flash

Flown on STS-108, 111, & 121 Missions

This Nikon SB-28DX Electronic Flash was flown in space during the Space Shuttle Program. The Flash Unit Assy is Class I flight hardware and NASA Part ID # SED33104064-304 s/n 5047 as identified on the parts ID decal applied to the back of the flash. This Nikon SB-28DX was flown on STS-108, 111, & 121. This flash bears a yellow label “STS-121" indicating it was last flown on that Space Shuttle Mission. NASA utilized labels such as this to insure Space Shuttle Crews did not depart the ISS with ISS equipment. All Space Shuttle photography equipment that could be co-mingled with ISS equipment during ISS visits were so marked.

Two or three Nikon Electronic Flashes were flown on most Space Shuttle flights. NASA continues to use the latest Nikon Flashes on the ISS. These hot shoe mounted flashes were designed to be used with NASA Nikon F-4, F-5 and Kodak Digital Series Cameras.

The blue Velcro on the flash was used to secure the NASA LumaQuest Diffuser (offered elsewhere on this website). A photo showing a camera/flash/diffuser (not included or showing this flash) in use on the Space Shuttle is shown.

The flash is fully functional with the addition of batteries (not included). Nikon display stand not included. Nikon Electronic Flash was purchased as NASA Surplus.
